What is PIE and How Can It Help You

PIEPartners in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, is the On-Campus Entrepreneurship Activities Program (OCEA) for Lakehead University and Confederation College. PIE is a collaboration between the University and College and the Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre aimed at promoting youth employment through entrepreneurship.

PIE provides students with:

  • Business development support
  • Entrepreneurship awareness activities
  • Workshops and seminars
  • Networking and mentorship opportunities

It can be as simple as coming and talking about an idea or getting some insight into building a business plan. Experience is not required – we want to help you bring your ideas to life.

Upcoming Events:


WHEN: Starts March 6, 2019

WHERE: Ingenuity, CASES Building, Lakehead University

WHAT: The Trail Blazer program is an 5 week program (1.5 hrs session/week) for early stage startups. The program is designed to take you through the necessary steps to identify your market and validate your idea.

The program consists of weekly training, e-learning modules, customer interaction, peer-to-peer learning, and experienced mentors to help you along the way. During this practical program you will learn how to use a business model canvas and develop each part of your business to ensure you’re building a business that makes sense and that your customer want.

The goal of the program, is for participants to have a validated business model. The program concludes with a graduation and pitch night where participants will have the opportunity to pitch their idea to a room of community members, potential customers, funders, and angel investors.


Looking for individuals/companies with an innovative idea that is scalable. Must be coachable, willing to engage with customers, and fully committed to moving their idea forward.

RBC Speed Mentoring:

WHEN: March 12, 2019

WHERE: Innovation Commons, TEC Hub – Confederation College

WHAT: Join us for this fun, interactive session where you will get a chance to chat with local entrepreneurs, career coaches, and RBC business specialist. There will also be an RBC Head shot Lounge on site! Dress your best and come by to get your professional head shot taken as you prepare for your future career. Chance to win $250 Visa Gift Card!


Social Innovation Challenge:

WHEN: March 9, 2019

WHERE:Trinity United Church – 50 Algoma Street South, Thunder Bay

WHAT: The social Innovation Challenge is a collaborative competition where people come together to develop a social impact business. Anyone with an idea can participate. The business can be at any stage from “just an Idea” to already launced and running as long as a core element of the business is to focus on creating positive social, or environmental impact. 3rd Tuesday:

WHEN: Every Third Tuesday of the month, 5 -7pm

WHERE: The Foundry

WHAT: Third Tuesdays are a place for Thunder Bay technologists to come out and network with their peers. We chat about technology, startups, and happenings in Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario. This is a casual event, open to all tech enthusiasts! Come on out meet other tech enthusiasts, have some apps (on us!) and a drink (on you!).


freeCode Camp:

WHEN: Sessions are every second Wednesday of the month from 7 – 9pm

WHERE: Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre

WHAT: freeCodeCamp Thunder Bay is an informal coding session where you can learn to code for free using the online freeCodeCamp interactive curriculum. Attendees are required to bring their own laptop. The format of the session is an informal study group to work on the freeCodeCamp curriculum or any of your own projects
